TYPE OF GAME
Line-up is a forerunner of 14-1 Continuous
Standard set of 15 balls plus cue ball
Standard triangle rack with the front apex ball on the foot spot. 1-ball on the rack’s right corner and 5-ball on left corner. All other balls placed at random. (see picture below)
OBJECT OF THE GAME
In the Line-up game, the object is to score a predetermined point total (150 in tournaments or any agreed upon total) before your opponent.
Each legally pocketed ball counts one point for shooter.
Starting player must pocket a called ball or drive 2 object balls to a cushion. If he fails to do so, he is assessed a 2 point penalty. Incoming player may accept the table in position and shoot or require that offender repeat the opening break until the requirements are satisfied. Each successive failure is a 2 point penalty for offending player.
RULES OF PLAY
A legally pocketed ball entitles shooter to continue at the table until failing to pocket a ball on a shot. Player may shoot any ball he chooses, but before he shoots, must designate the ball he will pocket and the pocket into which the ball will score. He need indicate no other details.
On all shots, player must cause the cue ball to contact an object ball and then either:
a) Pocket a numbered ball, or;
b) Cause the cue ball or any numbered ball to contact a cushion.
Failure to do so is a foul.
A player may call a safety rather than an object ball if he so desires (for defensive purposes). Safety play is legal but must comply with all applicable rules. Player’s inning ends when safety is played and pocketed balls are not scored. Any object ball pocketed on a called safety is spotted.
When the 15th ball of the rack has been pocketed, shooter records his scored balls from the rack. The balls are then spotted and player continues shooting playing the cue ball from where it came to rest after preceding shot, before the balls were spotted.
If player misses or fouls during the rack, he records his score and incoming player shoots, accepting the table in position.
ILLEGALLY POCKETED BALLS
In Line-up, all illegally pocketed balls are spotted and there’s no penalty.
PENALTY FOR FOULS
One point is deducted from offender’s score for each foul committed, unless the foul is the third successive foul. After fouls other than cue ball jump, cue ball scratch or third successive foul, incoming player accepts the table in position.
SUCCESSIVE FOULS PENALTY
If a player commits three successive fouls, he is penalized one point for each foul, and an additional deduction of 15 points. The balls are reracked and offending player is required to break the balls under the requirements of the opening break.
