HONOLULU
TYPE OF GAME
Honolulu is a unique pocket billiard game that confronts the player with an unending possibilities of strategic and shot-making challenges.
Essentially, Honolulu is just a game of one-rack call shot. Call any ball in any pocket; score one point per legally pocketed ball; the first player to make 8 points wins. (Said score, incidentally, being kept the same as in One Pocket: Put your balls in your bin [just pick a side] and respot out of your bin any time you scratch or foul).
The major critical difference being; absolutely no “straight-in” shots are allowed. Each and every legally pocketed ball must be made by means of either a bank, a combination, a carom, a “kick” shot or some combination thereof.
PLAYERS
Two players or two teams.
BALLS USED
Standard set of 15 object balls and cue ball
RACK
Standard triangle and balls racked entirely at random. (see picture below)
OBJECT OF THE GAME
Winner of the game must score eight points before the opponent.
SCORING
Player must ball and pocket. Each legally pocketed ball scores one point.
KICK SHOTS
No short-rail kicks. Kick shots are legal only when cue ball is first banked off rail not connected with designated pocket or if cue ball is banked off any two or more rails before striking object ball. (see examples below)
OPENING BREAK
On opening break the shooter must either;
1 – call and pocket a ball out of the rack or;
2 – cause two numbered balls plus the cue ball to hit the cushion after striking rack with cue ball
Failure to do either is a foul. The penalty is one point and incoming player accepts cue ball where it lies. Breaker owes 1 ball. Means that he must respot first ball he legally pockets.
RULES OF PLAY
In Honolulu, it is not necessary to call or specify kisses, caroms, rails etc. Only called balls legally score. Any balls accidentally or illegally pocketed are re-spotted at the end of the inning.
PENALTY FOR FOULS
1 point penalty (one ball either respotted or owed) per scratch or foul. Following scratch, incoming player has cue ball in hand in kitchen. Following foul, incoming player accepts cue ball where it lies. In Honolulu, there’s no three consecutive fouls penalty.
